XOI is a social venture founded by two Brown University students. XOI introduces gac fruit - a Vietnamese superfruit with 70 times more lycopene than tomatoes, and 10 times more beta-carotene than carrots, to the US. These antioxidants have been shown to improve prostate, heart, eye, reproductive and skin health.
Unlike the distinctive taste found in most superfruits, Gac is easily compatible with other ingredients, allowing it to appeal to groups with different flavor preferences.
Our business model is centered on working with ethnic minority farmers in Vietnam to cultivate and process Gac fruit in order to generate economic and social value for these indigenous communities.
Unlike purple superfruits— such as acai berry or pomegranate— the Gac fruit) is packed with a different group of antioxidants (carotenoids) that gives it its vibrant orange color. Gac fruit contains these powerful antioxidants:
- 70x more lycopene than tomatoes
- 10x more β-carotene than carrots
- 40x more vitamin C than oranges
- Omega fatty acids and vitamin E
- 40x more zeaxanthin than corn
The Origins of the Gac Fruit
For decades, the Gac fruit was used in a festive sticky rice (xoi gac) that is eaten during Vietnamese New Year celebrations and weddings. This dish serves as the inspiration for our name, XOI-- both as a reminder of the fruit's origins, and as a denotation of the joy experienced at occasions where xoi gac is served. Our aim at XOI is to bring this celebration to you through our natural Gac fruit products and to the ethnic minority farmers that we work with-- every day of the year.
The Gac fruit is also used in Chinese medicine to enhance immunity, vitality, balance, and skin healing.
