Spirits Spotlight: A New Whisky from the Heart of Speyside

Speyburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky releases 15 Years Old expression

NEW YORK and ROTHES, Scotland, Sept. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Single Malt Scotch Whisky brand Speyburn has added a new limited release expression to its multi award winning portfolio – the eagerly anticipated 15 Years Old.

Crafted in the stunning natural environment of Speyside – the 15 Years Old is created using fresh spring water from the Granty Burn, a stream flowing with soft and clear spring water and a major tributary of the River Spey. This unique expression has been matured in American oak and Spanish oak casks, adopting the fragrant Speyside air and surrounding rich woodland over time to become a full-bodied and vibrant dram.

The distinctive amber liquid with golden highlights has the aroma of subtle dark chocolate, vanilla, orange, raisins and spice. The rich taste is bursting, with notes of citrus fruits and has a creamy, warm and long-lasting finish.

To coincide with the release of the 15 Years Old, Speyburn has also introduced refreshed packaging. Along with a new label design, the products are now displayed in robust, premium cartons, each featuring the iconic Speyburn Distillery which reflect the heritage and stunning natural landscape of the distillery's home in the heart of Speyside.

"We're excited to release the 15 Years Old expression, with its distinctive rich taste and aroma, we're sure this spirit will satisfy whisky enthusiasts looking to extend their collection," explained Gillian Gibson, Speyburn Brand Manager.

"Since 1897, Speyburn has had a long history of working with the natural sources of Speyside, dating back to when our founder John Hopkins first established the distillery after discovering the Granty Burn," continued Gibson. "An insistence on using the most traditional methods of production, combined with an innovative and intuitive approach to distilling has resulted in a whisky portfolio packed with taste. This rich heritage is now, more than ever, reflected in the premium packaging and new website, bringing to life a history we are very proud of."

Being neither chill-filtered nor colored, the 15 Years Old unique dram boasts an authentic, quality taste that captures the vibrant essence and stunning natural environment of Speyside.

3,500 cases of the Speyburn 15 Years Old will be made available from the distillery annually.  The selection is bottled at 46% abv (92 proof) and will be offered as a limited release in the U.S. from importer 375 Park Avenue Spirits as of November at a suggested retail price of $65.

Industry News: Glasgow Distillery Causes A Stir At International World Spirits Challenge With a Six Medal Sweep

Experimenting pays off for multi award-winning Glasgow Distillery Company who have won a staggering six medals at a world industry competition against 400 of the finest gins from 35 countries.

Raising the bar for craft distilling, the single malt and gin specialist is causing a stir with its newest botanical offerings to the market – Makar Old Tom and their cask matured expressions – Makar Oak and Makar Mulberry.

Rewarding excellence since 1969, the annual International World Spirits Challenge (IWSC) hosted the 10th Annual Spirits Tasting at Vintners’ Hall in London last week, and presented The Glasgow Distillery with an outstanding silver for Makar Old Tom which scored an impressive 89.9% result – an excellent gin.

Makar Old Tom is hand distilled in a copper still with botanicals including Angelica, Black Pepper, Liquorice, Coriander, Orange, Sweet Almond, Juniper berries and finished with a drizzle of honey to re-create a sweeter and more traditional style of gin. Made in small batches, this is a super-premium gin made in the heart of Glasgow.

Judges found the distillery’s newest expression to be ‘an interesting interpretation of the category’ with an ‘assorted abundance of aromas ranging from orchard fruit to explosive herbal notes to focused juniper and beyond’. The cocktail gin also picked up a bronze quality award for design and packaging. While each Makar expression picked up an additional silver award. Makar London Dry was highlighted as amongst the best in the world to enjoy with tonic, garnering a silver award based on type, age and strength.

Only 200 global quality spirits across 90 categories were recognised by an intense two-stage judging process that sets the IWSC apart from other competitions. 400 judges from 30 countries are entrusted to seek out the world’s best spirits over a seven-month period which includes both double-blind tastings and a second round chemical and microbiological analysis of the winners. The Competition’s independent Technical & Judging Committee meet once a quarter to ensure the utmost integrity, accuracy and impartiality during the judging process.

Overall, each gin in the Makar Gin portfolio was awarded:
· Makar Old Tom – Silver (Outstanding)
· Makar Original (G&T Category) – Silver
· Makar Oak - Silver
· Makar Mulberry – Silver
· Makar Original (London Dry Category) – Bronze
· Makar Old Tom – Packaging Bronze

The award wins are the latest in an exciting flurry of awards from every notable global spirits competition this year.

Commenting on the multiple award wins was Liam Hughes, CEO of The Glasgow Distillery Company, the crafters behind Makar:

"Scotland is a global destination for outstanding food and drink and this is a fantastic result for the industry. Winning six awards from such a distinguished judging process highlights our commitment to innovation and our confidence in creating super premium products for our customers to enjoy across the globe. The gin market is booming, taste profiles are evolving; customers are looking for big botanical flavours and unusual combinations. We’re passionate about our products and winning these awards gives our distillers the confidence to continue to challenge flavours, experiment and create more handcrafted products.”

MAKAR OLD TOM: Old Tom re-creates an old-fashioned, sweeter style of gin which became extinct, but has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years. Before today’s dry gins, the popular style was both richer and sweeter. Makar Old Tom revives this tradition, complementing the bold juniper of makar with orange peel, almonds and a little honey. The result is an exceptionally well-balanced, complex and rewarding Old Tom Gin perfect for traditional cocktails such as the Tom Collins and Martinez.

The name Old Tom, allegedly came from wooden plaques shaped like a black cat (an “Old Tom”) mounted on the outside wall of some pubs above a public walkway in 18th century England. Owing to the popularity of Gin the British Government tried to stem the flow of gin with prohibitive taxes and licensing, which drove Gin sales underground. Under the cat's paw sign was a slot to put money in and a lead tube. From the tube would come a shot of gin, poured by the bartender inside the pub.

Botanicals include Juniper, Angelica, Black Pepper, Liquorice, Coriander, Orange, Lemon, Sweet Almond, and Honey.

Makar Glasgow Gin

The first gin to be distilled in Glasgow, Makar Glasgow Gin is a vibrant, hand-crafted, super premium, juniper-led gin.

Makar is distilled in our copper pot still named Annie, named after one of the founder's grandmothers (she loved a G&T).

Makar gin combines seven carefully selected botanicals with Juniper to create the iconic Makar taste. Angelica root, black pepper, liquorice, cassia bark, rosemary, coriander seeds and lemon peel combine to create a delicate, yet distinctly bold juniper-led gin. These seven botanicals are represented in the iconic seven-sided Makar Gin bottle.

Makar derives its name from the traditional scotch word for 'the maker' or 'the crafter'. This reflects the care and attention that is invested in crafting this super-premium spirit, whilst paying respect to its Scottish heritage.

The perfect serve for Makar Glasgow Gin is equal measures of Makar and a quality tonic water, over ice, with a slice of mild green chili pepper.

Makar Gin is the first product release from The Glasgow Distillery Company and was released in late 2014.

Makar Gin is truly as bold and forward as the city from which it is from. Proudly Glaswegian, Makar is putting Glasgow firmly and squarely on the gin-lovers' map.

The entire Makar range:

  • Makar Glasgow Gin
  • Makar Old Tom Gin
  • Makar Oak Aged Gin
  • Makar Mulberry Aged Gin

The Glasgow Distillery Company

Glasgow's first single malt distillery in Glasgow since 1902 and the original pioneers of Scotland's new wave of single malt distilleries.

We take our name from one of Glasgow's oldest and original distilleries. Founded at Dundashill in 1770, the original Glasgow Distillery Company remained active until the beginning of the 20th Century where The Great Depression, Prohibition and two World Wars led to the original distillery, alongside hundreds of others, to sadly close.

In 2011, our three founding partners envisaged an opportunity to bring single-malt whisky distilling back to Glasgow. An opportunity to build a brand new craft distillery in the heart of metropolitan Glasgow and product Scotch Malt Whisky and Premium Gin in the spirit of the original pioneers in which this great merchant city was built.

In 2014 The Glasgow Distillery Company was reborn with new premises in the city and our first whisky was laid down before the years' end,

marking the next step in our journey. This whisky will mature for three years and one day from the original cask-date, waiting patiently until it's birth as a fully-formed single malt scotch whisky. In 2018 Glasgow will see the result of this patient waiting game as it welcomes it's first single-malt whisky in over 110 years.

At The Glasgow Distillery Company we look at our trade a little differently. We take on the bold character of the city from which we come; bottling the passion, personality and unmistakable character of Glasgow into our range of unashamedly bold products.

Our spirits are magically hand crafted in our three unique copper stills: Annie, Mhairi and Tara, each named after family members of our three founding members. Each of our products is hand crafted and endorsed by the Craft Distillers Association, of which we are founding members and passionate champions.

Spirits Spotlight: The Archaeologist: In a World First, the True Spirit of Harley Davidson is Embodied in Drinkable Form. Serviceplan Group Develop Creative Concept with Renowned Hamburg Designers “Studio Oeding”

Lovers of iconic Harley Davidson motorbikes from all over the globe make a pilgrimage to the workshop of Ehinger Kraftrad, an internationally renowned manufacturer of custom-made motorbikes. Kraftrad has taken his obsession to another level, with the creation of 'The Archaeologist', a Premium Dry Gin whose bottles have the unusual feature of containing original Harley engine parts.

HAMBURG, Germany, July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- For decades, Uwe Ehinger, founder and namesake of the world's first Premium Dry Gin to contain Harley Davidson engine parts, has been searching the most remote places on the planet for antique motorbikes, and saving them for dealing or as core pieces for designing his own models. This earned him the nickname ˮThe Archaeologist".

ˮEverything I do pays tribute to the things that used to be", Ehinger explains about his work. Now he honours some of the greatest legends in motorcycle history with a special homage in liquid form: ˮThe Archaeologist".

"The Archaeologist" is a Premium Dry Gin – and the first spirit of its kind. Thus, it's filled in bottles together with original engine parts of legendary Harley Davidson bikes Ehinger has discovered someplace over the world: 1939 Flathead camshafts from the Mexican desert, 1947 Knucklehead screw-nuts from Chile or 1962 Panhead rocker arms from South Korea. To each of these iconic machines, Ehinger dedicates a very own sort of tribute Gin.

As an analogy to Ehinger's motorcycles, ˮThe Archaeologist" is pure craftsmanship: The parts of the motorbikes are specially cleansed and sealed with a tin alloy to make it safe for them to be utilized in a drink. Subsequently, they are soldered onto a steel structure and encased by a handcrafted bottle. The creative concept was developed by Serviceplan Group together with renowned Hamburg designers "Studio Oeding".

The entire look and feel recreates the original packing of the antique engine parts – using authentic materials and historic techniques. Packages are made using selected cardboards and colours, printed on an original Heidelberg Tiegelprinting press from 1931. Waxed wrapping paper tells the story of each discovery.

This unique design is completed by hand-stamped, tamper-proof seals and clenched hang-tags, each bearing the unique serial number of the engine part in its respective bottle.

Every single bottle of ˮThe Archaeologist" is a unique item and therefore as irretrievable as the era of the motorcycles it represents. Preserved for eternity – or at least for a very special night amongst motorbike enthusiasts.

The first edition of ˮThe Archaeologist" is reserved for Ehinger's most loyal customers and is only served in Ehinger's garage. A limited number were distributed via the website's online shop and sold out within hours. Advance orders for the next series can be placed from now on.

Company Spotlight: Kimo Sabe Mezcal

Kimo Sabe is a high-end approachable mezcal. By owning their own distillery and estate of 1200 hectars of agave, KS has consistency of flavor. The brand utilizes its renown flavor experts coming from the world of fine cacao, a secret element in the taste of Kimo, creating a premium flavor compared to any high end tequila with it's Joven mezcal. And with it’s oak profiles in the resposado and anejo mezals, KS has created a drink with the style and grace of sipping whisky and/or cognac.

Why Kimo Sabe?

MEZCAL IS BETTER FOR YOU
Mezcal has, by law, lower high alcohols (the ones that make your brain hurt and lead to hangovers) than any other spirit including Tequila.Mezcal = 400 PPM
Tequila = 500 PPM
Bourbon/Whiskey = 1000 PPM

KIMO SABE MEZCAL IS SMOOTH
Kimo Sabe, unlike any other spirit, uses sound technology to homogenize the molecules in the spirit. This makes the liquid clean and smooth from the first sip to the last note.

MEZCAL IS A STIMULANT
Along with the energy of the sound waves, agave plants are like solar panels, they absorb sun during the day and grow at night. Harvested after 8 years of sun absorption you are drinking SUN and SOUND energy – a natural stimulant!

MEZCAL IS MORE COMPLEX
MEZCAL – Can use up to 42 types of agave plants, many processing choices and must be made with 100% agave.

TEQUILA – Can only use one agave type, one processing style, and can be made with only 51% agave.

Mezcal, like a multi-color picture,
has more ways to create complex depth of flavor than the black and white picture of tequila.

Spirits Spotlight: Copper and Kings Vapor Distilled Ginger Absinthe Superior

Double distilled non-chill filtered. No added sugar, flavors, colorants or synthetic chemicals. Copper pot-distilled in American stills handcrafted and hammered in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

An original handcrafted distillation of classic absinthe superior botanicals – artemisia absinthium, anis, fennel, hyssop, etc., accented with select aromatics, including macerated & vapor distilled ginger. Small batch double distillation of superior, highly aromatic colombard wine selected for exceptional quality. Distilled just twice retaining concentrated herbal flavor compounds with layered, overt ginger spice for a novel interpretation of absinthe superior.

Non-chill filtered for an authentic uncorrupted natural flavor and natural color. Some cloudiness will be apparent at colder temperatures. A beautiful signature natural translucent, milky louche.

Earthy & spicy with a harmonious layering of signature absinthe herbaceous notes; grande wormwood, sweet fennel and licorice. Punctuated with a crisp, spicy ginger bite.

About Copper & Kings

We use traditional copper pot-distillation to forge untraditional craft-distilled, natural, pure pot-still brandies. We make definitive American Brandy influenced by American Whiskey and American music. We do not make derivative brandy styled upon a European sensibility.

Our brandies are batch distilled exclusively in copper pot-stills, and are non-chill filtered with no added sugar, boisé (powdered oak, shavings or infusion) other flavors, synthetic chemicals or caramel colorants for an uncorrupted, authentic, natural flavor, nose and color. Our aged brandies exit the barrel full integrity intact.

We adopt a “low & slow” distillation philosophy – a relatively low distillation temperature, for a longer, slower distillation, maximum copper contact, to express concentrated flavors, aromas, and smoothness.

Philosophically the art of brandy distillation revolves around the concept of retention and concentration. The distiller is attempting to retain the nuance found in the base wine. (As opposed to whiskey distillation where the concept revolves more around extraction and purification to palatability). You “stroke” brandy in to shape.
