About the company

Clearspring is a privately owned UK company established in the 1980s to distribute great tasting traditional foods that support good health; promote sustainable agriculture; and provide economic stability for producer communities.

Set up by its current Chairman, Christopher Dawson, in 1993, Clearspring has grown from annual sales of £640,000 to monthly sales of £750,000 in 2013. Clearspring currently distributes over 180 products from around the world, has 16 wholesale customers in the UK, and further wholesale customers in more than 40 countries worldwide.

From their west London offices Christopher and his staff travel around the world in search of high quality products that meet Clearspring's exacting standards. Each product is carefully evaluated for purity of ingredients and ecologically sound manufacturing practices. Clearspring looks for products that are GMO free and made with whole organic ingredients. Refined organic ingredients such as organic sugar are not acceptable; Clearspring believes that refining organic foods depletes them of their intrinsic value.

joyashakes

Product Spotlight: Joya Soya Shakes

Joya from Austria has launched a line of soy shakes. Currently available in 2 flavor options.

JOYA ‘Swiss Chocolate’ Shake
Our tip: shake first to get twice the chocolate enjoyment! Finest Swiss chocolate and JOYA soy. Tastes good, good for you. Typically JOYA.

Ingredients: soya base 90% (water, soya beans 9,3%); beet sugar; chocolate 1% (cocoa mass, sugar); low-fat cocoa 0,9%; salt; seaweed: Chondrus Crispus.

JOYA ‘Bourbon Vanilla’ Shake
Creamy vanilla is what bourbon vanilla fans love most. And that’s how they get their JOYA vanilla bourbon shake. In a convenient tub with a lid – perfect for travel.

Ingredients: soya base 92% (water, soya beans 9,6%); beet sugar; glucose syrup; maize starch; bourbon vanilla extract 0,3%; salt; curcuma extract.

About Joya
You might find it selfish, but it’s true: There is nothing in JOYA that we don’t like ourselves.

What do you get out of this little quirk of ours? Our products are guaranteed GM-free, contain no added flavours, and are made from the best Austrian soy. Without exception.

How we know what we know

We know our partners by name – and speak the same language. In the metaphorical sense, too. You are guaranteed the best raw materials, our farmers across Austria are pleased at fair partnerships, and our environment benefits from short transport routes and freedom from genetic modification. It works, if you try.

Of course we’re strict.

We are honoured by your trust in us, but we also have to earn it first. By knowing exactly where our beans come from, among other things. And they are of course GM-free. And because that works so well, we do that with all other raw materials and ingredients, and go a step further – all our ingredients are guaranteed not to be genetically modified.

Flavour? Of course. Flavouring? Of course not.

It tastes the way it tastes. And that’s a good thing. That’s why we deliberately refrain from any kind of flavour ad

soiajumex

Product Spotlight: Jumex Soia Drinks

Summary

Jumex has launched a line of soy based juice drinks under the brand Soia. Soia is a juice drink made from a base of liquid soy.  Because of its vegetable base Soia does not contain lactose or cholesterol.  Soy products have numerous health benefits including being good for developing strong bones and good for the heart.  The high protein content of soy also helps in the growth and development of bones and assists in better artery function.

Analysis
Soy drinks are very popular in México.  Currently the brand Ades dominates the soy juice drink category and with the launch of Soia, Jumex aims to take a piece of the market share pie.  Mixing soy with fruit juice creates a functional beverage that offers many health benefits.  The diversity of flavors and product sizes will help Soia reach many consumer segments.  We expect to see competition heat up in the soy drinks category in México as Soia enters the market.  Given that there are few brands in this segment there is room for growth and diversity of products including more flavor and packaging options.

Company: Jumex
Brand:  Soia
Category: Juice, Drinks
Origin: México
Packaging: 200ml, 1 liter
Claims: 0% Cholesterol
Price: 200ml - $4MXP, 1 liter Tetra Brick - $13.50 MXP,

The dark side of soya: how one super crop lost its way

A decade ago, soya was being hailed as a superfood but in recent years, numerous issues surrounding deforestation and its impact on health have come to light

Once credited with power to prevent cancer and combat high cholesterol, over the last few years, evidence that soya is far from a superfood has begun to emerge. And it’s not just the potentially negative health impact of the bean that has former supporters up in arms: it’s the environmental impact. In the UK we rely heavily on soya, or soy, and it's not just for vegetarian food. It is a hidden product in many foods and everyday items such as soap. It is a cheap source of protein for people as well as animals and according toGreenpeace, 80 per cent of soya worldwide is used for the livestock industry.  WWF add that the UK consumption alone requires an area the size of Yorkshire to be planted with soya every year. So how did soya go from super crop to super bad?
