Coffee Spotlight: Laird Superfood Announces New Organic Ground Coffee with Functional Mushrooms

Crafted with premium Peruvian coffee beans, the Organic Ground Coffee with Functional Mushrooms is available in dark and medium roast

SISTERS, Ore., May 19, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Laird Superfood, creator of plant-based superfood products, has added Dark Roast and Medium Roast Ground Coffee with Functional Mushrooms to its popular lineup of organic Peruvian coffees.

Laird Superfood's new coffee blend is infused with the extracts of three of Co-Founder Laird Hamilton's favorite organic functional mushrooms: Cordyceps, Chaga and Lion's Mane. Emerging science reports functional mushrooms may help support overall wellness.

  • A mushroom that is loved by high-endurance performers of all genres, Cordyceps has been studied for its effects on the body's production of ATP.

  • Considered the "King of Mushrooms," Chaga has been referred to as "Chaga Gold '' for its valuable properties. One of Laird's favorite mushrooms, it wouldn't be uncommon to find a pot of Chaga simmering on the back burner.

Lion's Mane:

  • Lion's Mane is an edible mushroom native to North America, Europe, and Asia. Polysaccharides, specifically the beta-glucans, are what makes this mushroom (and others) special. Science is studying this mushroom for its potential effects on cognition and immune support.

The Peruvian Arabica coffee beans are grown at a high altitude of more than 4,000 feet so that with lower oxygen levels, the beans grow slower and denser. A dense bean provides a dynamic flavor profile.

"The organic coffee beans that we use are from a trusted Peruvian coffee grower in the Andes," said Laird Hamilton, big-wave surfer and Co-Founder of Laird Superfood. "The opportunity to go to the coffee farm and see how they grow the beans, how they harvest them, and how they dry them was an amazing experience. Each farmer farms by hand in this incredibly fertile environment high in the Andes. It proved to me why they are rated as the best beans in the world. They pair epically with the power of functional mushrooms to create a powerful morning cup. I don't know how you can grow better beans."

Laird Superfood's organic Ground Coffee with Functional Mushrooms delicious flavor takes a five-step process that ensures dynamic taste with lower acidity and more body:

  • Hand-picked – Instead of bulk-collecting both ripe and unripe beans using machinery, hand-picked beans ensure appropriate ripeness.
  • Wet-processed – Loosens the skins for gentle extraction and less damage to the beans.
  • Carefully dried – Beans are carefully spread out and dried to ensure an even drying of every bean.
  • Small-Batch Slow Roast – Prevents the beans from burning and aids in producing the best flavor profiles.
  • Laird-Approved – "Cupping" is the final step. Samples of the beans are tested for varied temperatures and lengths of roast to find the perfect Laird-approved roast.

The Dark and Medium Roast Coffee with Functional Mushrooms is ground to a medium-fine to fine grind size of 906 μm – 860 μm – compatible with pour-overs, drip coffees, and espresso. To maintain the rich aroma and roast profile, Laird Superfood uses a proprietary inert gas packaging system that effectively removes unwanted oxygen from the bag. The system keeps flavor locked-in so each pot of coffee will taste as good as the next. To prepare, simply brew the coffee and add one of the popular Laird Superfood creamers for the perfect cup of joe.

Newly Discovered Mushroom Can Eat Plastic

It’s called pestalotiopsis microspora, and it’s a fungi discovered by a group of Yale researchers on an expedition in Ecuador. Could this mean we’re on track to finally begin the lessening of the Earth’s plastic excess?

According to a Yale study and recap from ABC/Yahoo News, our planet is on a plastic production frenzy. Plastic can be recycled, but for the most part, it just turns into another product, never being eradicated from the planet. We’ve reportedly produced 245 million tons of plastic in 2006, compared to a relatively measly 1.5 million tons in 1950.

Mushroom Packaging Continues to Intrigue Packaging Industry

Recently Packaging World reported that fully compostable mushroom based packaging would be used to ship stand-up surf boards from PUMA.

And it’s that familiar name that keeps popping up every time you hear mushroom packaging…Ecovative!  Utilizing their unique packaging called EcoCradle to replace plastic foam packaging; Ecovative’s “roots” are becoming firmly planted into packaging.

Why is this option so intriguing?

For us, coming from a manufacturing background makes this creation something to marvel at.  The manufacturing process has been removed and it’s been turned into package farming!  I never could have imagined that packaging would be grown instead of manufactured.

Mushroom-based packaging could be the next big thing

GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Turns out that mushrooms — great in soups and salads — also make decent packaging material.Mushrooms are a key ingredient in the pale, soft blocks produced by the thousands in an upstate New York plant that are used to cushion products ranging from Dell Inc. servers to furniture for Crate and Barrel.

More precisely, the packaging blocks are made with mycelium — the hidden “roots” of the mushroom that usually thread beneath dirt or wood. Two former mechanical engineering and design students, Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre, figured out how to grow those cottony filaments in a way that binds together seed husks or other agricultural byproducts into preset packaging shapes.Their 5-year-old company, Ecovative Design, has a toe-hold in the increasingly lucrative market for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic foams — and their business is growing like shiitakes on a damp log. Bayer and McIntyre are already expanding their line for everything from footwear to car bumpers.

“We want to be the Dow or DuPont of this century,” Bayer said.

If the aspiration sounds grandiose, consider that six years ago Bayer and McIntyre were Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute students growing fungus under their beds for a class project. Today, the young entrepreneurs are more than doubling their production space and recently announced a deal with Sealed Air Corp., the packaging giant known for Bubble Wrap.

Not bad for a product that grows itself.

Workers at Ecovative inoculate mycelium into pasteurized bits of seed husks or plant stalks, then place the mix into clear plastic molds shaped like the desired packaging pieces, such as a cradle-shaped mold for a wine bottle. The mix is covered for about five days as millions of mycelium strands grow around and through the feedstock, acting as a kind of glue. The piece is heat dried to kill the fungus, insuring that mushrooms can’t sprout from it. Since the mycelium is cloned, the product does not include spores, which can trigger allergies. The packaging is edible, technically, though it does not appear appetizing and is not recommended as a snack.

“It’s low-tech biotech,” Bayer said.

Bayer noticed mycelium’s “stretchy” properties as a kid growing up on a Vermont farm. As students, he and McIntyre started with mushroom-based insulation, but the pair switched to packaging material because it seemed a better business bet. They experimented with common varieties like the oyster mushrooms before hitting on just the right (secret) mix.

The company moved several years ago to a 10,000-square-foot facility in Green Island that still has the feel of a startup: an old industrial asparagus blancher pasteurizes the feedstock, and the mycelium is applied with a machine that once put chocolate chips on cookies. McIntyre’s pet chinchilla, Audrey, rolls around the offices in a plastic pet ball.

Bayer said Ecovative, with 42 employees, has attracted more than $10 million in grants and equity investment, as well as some big-name clients. Dell director of procurement Oliver Campbell said his company has a pilot program using the Ecovative product instead of polyethylene foam for shipping a high-end server.
