Industry News: MOM’s Organic Market launches sales of insects!

ROCKVILLE, Md., Feb. 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Family owned and operated MOM's Organic Market has introduced a wide selection of sustainable insect proteins to its Ivy City, DC location. The retailer's interest in entomophagy was spurred by a trip to Mexico's La Merced Market. There, MOM's VP of Produce & Grocery and VP of Wellness, Lisa de Lima and Steve Geest, respectively, were astonished by the developed flavor of the vendors' escamoles (ant larvae). They left knowing these versatile and varied proteins had to be featured on MOM's shelves.

After successfully launching Sustainable Protein sections at MOM's locations in Baltimore, MD, Cherry Hill, NJ, and White Marsh, MD, the Ivy City store has added items such as:

  • Cricket or mealworm Bolognese sauce
  • Cricket cookies, snack bars, and chips
  • Whole, flavored mealworms and crickets - available to purchase in bulk!
  • Cricket or mealworm protein powder

Besides the appealing textures and applications of these proteins, MOM's was compelled to offer an alternative protein because of their comparatively small environmental footprint. "Not only are items containing insects incredibly nutritious, they can also have a positive impact on our global food supply," says Lisa de Lima. "Insects release fewer greenhouse gases than livestock, and require a lot less space and water to raise."

All MOM's will be offering a Sustainable Protein tasting on Saturday, February 25th from 11am-1pm.

Company Spotlight: Critter Bitters

Insects are the first viable solution to the world's food shortage. Two billion people around the world already eat insects. For those of us who don't, the barrier is often a psychological one.

Critter Bitters take "the ick factor" out of entomophagy. Cocktails won't save the world, but eating bugs might.

Designers Lucy Knops and Julia Plevin are the co-founders of Critter Bitters. They met at The School of Visual Arts, where they both received an MFA in Products of Design.

Lucy Knops

Lucy is a multidisciplinary designer who seeks to challenge social norms through her work. She pulls from over 10 years of experience living and working in NYC in the fashion and design community and as a bartender. She holds a BA in History from New York University and a MFA from the Products of Design program at The School of Visual Arts.

Julia Plevin

Julia is a designer, strategist, and writer with a keen eye for innovation and a passion for culture change. Snack Spotlight: Exo Banana Bread Protein Bar

Exo makes nutrient-dense real food bars, designed by a three-Michelin-starred chef. We combine minimally-processed cricket flour protein with ultra-premium ingredients for a bar without compromise. No gluten, grain, soy, dairy or refined sugars. Perfect as a meal-replacement, healthful snack or pre/post-exercise. Sustainable fuel for the explorers among us.

For our first nut-free* offering, we take a delectably smooth sunflower seed butter base, add bananas, vanilla and a touch of spice for good measure. Tasting exactly as its name describes, it's banana bread, without the junk.

* Manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, milk, soy, and egg.

Insects are exceptionally nutritious. They are high in protein and low in saturated fats and sugars. They are a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids, and are also high in micronutrients such as iron, calcium and B-vitamins. Crickets, for example, contain substantially more iron than beef.

Insects have marginal environmental impact. They produce virtually no methane, reproduce extremely quickly, and require minimal feed, water and space. It is estimated that crickets are 20x more efficient to raise for protein than cattle. Read More

About the Company:

They arrived in two shoebox-sized containers. And they were very, very loud. We wanted to find out if we could make a food product using insects that actually tasted good. Armed with Google research, a vague recipe for cricket flour, an oven, and a blender, it was time to walk the walk...

Gabi had created a basic protein bar recipe while on his own quest to make a snack both healthy and delicious, prompted by his frustration at the nutrition-taste tradeoff marring everything commercially available. The idea to add insects came when Greg, one of Gabi’s five college roommates, attended a conference at MIT on the breakdown of global systems that sparked a conversation about insects’ tremendous environmental benefits relative to other food sources. He intuitively understood that only by combining insects with something more familiar—protein bars, for example—could people here be convinced to eat them. Read More

Why Eat Insects?

For centuries, human civilizations have rightly considered insects an excellent, plentiful and resource-efficient source of protein. Even today, 80 percent of the world's people regularly munch edible insects as part of their normal diets – chapulines in Mexico, stir-fried red tree ants in Cambodia, inago (grasshoppers) and hachinoko (bee larvae) in Japan and casu marzu in Italy. And with good reason &mdash eating insects provides an incredibly rich source of protein, iron and omega-3 acids and are very low in cholesterols and fat. Read More
