About the Company
Four friends; Carlin, Christian, Sheila, and Xandy, started Elevation Beer Co. on a cool Colorado night over a few beers and a backyard BBQ.

We all had the same dream of starting a brewery that brewed the highest quality barrel aged and specialty beers we could imagine. At the same time we all dreamed of living in an area of Colorado that would allow us to sneak out of the brewhouse to catch a four-pound trout, hike a 14,000-foot peak, or slash through some of Colorado’s famous powder. In the winter of 2012 we made our dreams a reality and took the leap and started brewing in Poncha Springs, Colorado.

Cruzan® Rum unveils its latest innovation, Cruzan® Velvet Cinn™, to fill the need for a premium rum option in the rapidly growing rum horchata market. Now available nationally, Cruzan Velvet Cinn features fine Cruzan Rum with the addition of rich, sweet dairy cream and a smooth cinnamon flavor.

Cruzan Rum is made from tropical rainwater and high-quality molasses and is distilled to be the cleanest-tasting rum on the market. Crafted by Cruzan Master Distiller Gary Nelthropp, whose family has been making rum on the island of St. Croix for generations, Cruzan Velvet Cinn stands out among other horchatas. In addition to containing Cruzan Rum, it combines the flavors of bakery cinnamon and rich dairy for a smooth and creamy combination reminiscent of cinnamon toast. Velvet Cinn also has a higher proof than others in the category.

“As rum horchatas gain in popularity and presence, Cruzan Rum saw the opportunity in the marketplace to develop a premium rum horchata option. Velvet Cinn makes an excellent addition to our exceptional portfolio and fills a need in the marketplace for a premium cream rum liqueur,” said Nabil Wanna, Senior Brand Manager of Rum at Beam Inc. “It fits right in with our expansion of flavors and provides rum horchata lovers with a high-quality alternative.”

Horchata is a milky drink that originates from Mexico and is especially popular when mixed with rum. Horchata the next chai in global beverage platform

It seems like only yesterday that masala chai, otherwise known as "chai tea" in this part of the world, burst onto the scene and became the chic new drink on restaurant menu boards. Its unique blend of sweet and spicy flavors enchanted beverage drinkers, and after 20-plus years, it has become as ubiquitous in our industry as the café latté or cappuccino.

In some respects, the rise of chai in the U.S. is really quite remarkable. For one, the flavor is robust and often polarizing. Unlike other forms of tea, chai seems to elicit a love-or-hate reaction from chai newbies, which is an unusual attribute for such a popular and successful product. More surprising, the U.S. has only a modest Indian population that would have been remotely familiar with the product beforehand, and consumer acceptance did not come gradually; rather, chai became popular almost overnight, and it has sustained that status even today.

The Next Big Health Drink? Spanish Horchata

Get ready, America. It’s only a matter of time before Spanish horchata becomes the new super-healthy it drink. Unlike milky-white Mexican horchata—made by straining and sweetening a pureed blend of raw rice and water—Spanish horchata is made from tiger nuts (shown above), a tuber that thrives in the area around Valencia.

Often called chufa in Spain, tiger nuts were brought to the Iberian peninsular by the Arabs in the 8th century. The ancient Egyptians knew a good thing; they’ve been cultivating tiger nuts for over 4,000 years. Although the tubers are about the size of a pea, they pack a wallop of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids, while the list of health benefits goes on and on, from improving digestion, to helping with hot flashes, cleansing the liver, as well as possessing anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties.

Walk into a horchateria in Valencia, and you’ll be served a tall glass filled with an ice-cold liquid the color of pale cappuccino, with a flavor faintly reminiscent of caramel and almonds. Although it looks milky, it’s dairy-free, and it goes down easily.

The best version I had was at La Huertana, a stand in the Mercado Centrale, which claims to be the largest indoor market building in Europe. Along with the horchata come long fingers of a soft, lightly sweetened bread called fartons (yes, you read that right!).  Dip the warm fartons into the chilled liquid for a delightful play of simultaneous hot and cold sensations in your mouth.  Eager to try horchata? Order it from LaTienda.com.
