Cornell Is Asking You to Name Its New Grapes

Scientists from Cornell University are turning to you, the public, to name two new varieties of grapes--one for winemaking, one for eating--that are coming out of Cornell's agricultural research labs. Right now, the varieties are called "NY76.0844.24" and "NY95.0301.01," but those robot names belie some delicious-sounding qualities.

The first one, let's call it "24," is a white wine grape that's both cold- and disease-resistant and that, according to grape breeder Bruce Reisch, has "excellent wine quality and aromatic characters reminiscent of Gewurtztraminer or a citrusy Muscat."

The second, ".01," is a dark red grape that grows well with no pesticides, perfect for the organic market, and that Reisch says "exhibits moderate body, good structure, and a blueberry flavor on the palate."

Cornell's press release says that "foreign-sounding" names are popular, but we say let's take the grape back from the foreigners! We're just spitballing here, but the "24" sounds like a Mavis, or maybe a Noreen. For ".01," rolling with the organic blueberry thing, let's go no-nonsense: Bangor Anarchist. Has a nice ring to it, even if the best blueberries come from closer to the coast.
