Company Spotlight: JANIBELL Advanced Waste Disposal System

With Janibell XO the pre-printed liner determines the receptacle's use. Collect lots of waste in a small space, with the flexibility to quickly change each receptacle's purpose whenever needed.

Collect Lots of Waste in a Small Space

Janibell XO holds a full 23 gallons of waste in a unit that has a Janibell XO holds a full 23 gallons of waste in a unit that has a separation, the XO takes up very little space! Plus, with each unit's purpose so clear, properly sorting the trash — or unit's purpose so clear, properly sorting the trash — or potentially hazardous materials — is easy.

The Bag Determines the Use

With Janibell XO, the same receptacle can be used for linen today and paper recycling tomorrow — the unit's purpose at any point in time is determined and clearly announced by the pre-printed liner that is being used. Since the receptacle itself is not labeled in any way, it is a single but extremely flexible multi-use solution.

Hygienic and Efficient

For infection and hygiene control, the XO's optional lid and foot pedal allow for hands-free operation and complete waste containment. Like all Janibell receptacles, XO helps prevent the spread of pathogens, viruses and bacterium such as C-DIFF by containing and minimizing exposure to the waste. In fact, XO provides maximum efficiency, hygiene and waste-free disposal in most commercial environments:

  • Workers are never exposed to bag contents
  • Heavy bags don't need to be lifted up out of the unit
  • Bags can be cut to any size, eliminating waste of liner material
  • Each liner makes 30 full-size bags or many more smaller ones

  • 23-gallon capacity
  • Small footprint
  • Eco-friendly liner system
  • Sturdy steel construction
  • 5-year limited warrant

Packaging Spotlight: Carlsberg to launch world’s first biodegradable beer bottle

Carlsberg unveils latest Carlsberg Circular Community initiative at World Economic Forum in Davos. New Community partners also announced.

DAVOS, 22nd January, 2015 – In the context of its participation in a panel on Wasteless Supply at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Carlsberg today announced a ground-breaking agreement to develop the world’s first fully biodegradable wood-fiber bottle for beverages.

Carlsberg has initiated a three-year project with packaging company ecoXpac, with the collaboration of Innovation Fund Denmark and the Technical University of Denmark, to develop a biodegradable and biobased bottle made from sustainably sourced wood-fiber, to be known as the “Green Fiber Bottle”.

All materials used in the bottle, including the cap, will be developed using bio-based and biodegradable materials – primarily, sustainably sourced wood-fibers – allowing the bottle to be responsibly degraded.

Commenting on the announcement from Carlsberg HQ in Copenhagen, Andraea Dawson-Shepherd, Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs, said: “At Carlsberg we are firm believers in the importance of a circular economy in ensuring sustainable future growth and development on our planet, and today’s announcement is excellent news. If the project comes to fruition, as we think it will, it will mark a sea-change in our options for packaging liquids, and will be another important step on our journey towards a circular, zero-waste economy.”

This latest initiative forms part of the Carlsberg Circular Community (CCC), a cooperation between Carlsberg and selected partners whose aim is to pursue a circular, zero-waste economy by using the Cradle to Cradle® (C2C®) framework when developing and marketing new products. The CCC currently comprises six founding partners, with two new partners, ecoXpac and 1HQ (a global branding agency), announced today. Its goal is to have 15 partners by 2016.

Oral Care Spotlight: WooBamboo! Eco Friendly Toothbrushes

We are extremely proud to introduce our line of eco-friendly natural toothbrushes! The handles are all made from organically grown, sustainable, biodegradable, antimicrobial bamboo. The recyclable bristles are Dupont Tynex, arguably the best quality and most trusted bristle available. So when you’re done using your Woo Bamboo toothbrush, you could literally pull out and recycle the bristles, and throw the handle into your compost where it will gently biodegrade. As we say, they’re “Dentist approved, Mother Nature recommended!”

The WooBamboo Standard Handle toothbrush is ergonomically curved to fit the hand. Dentists would recommend using our SOFT bristle, but we also have this design available in a MEDIUM and a SUPER SOFT (for sensitive teeth & gums).

The WooBamboo Slim Handle brush is slightly thinner, with a smaller head – typically (but not only) for a smaller mouth and hand. Again, dentists would recommend using our SOFT bristle, but we also have this design available in a MEDIUM and a SUPER SOFT (for sensitive teeth & gums).

Lastly, the WooBamboo “Sprouts” are small child’s or travel sized brushes. For children’s teeth, a dentist would recommend using SUPER SOFT bristles, so that’s what we use exclusively. (But large custom orders can be made with either SOFT, MEDIUM, SUPER SOFT) If you’re interested in large custom orders or private labeling,

Using a natural product versus using a plastic product will, of course, require a bit more care. It’s not a big deal, however, but here are some pointers:

Don’t let your brush sit in liquid! This is a big one. Perhaps the BIGGEST one. Bamboo is porous, so it will eventually soak up water and expand. This is no bueno. So do yourself and your new favorite toothbrush a favor: dry it after each use and stand it up in a vented cup (or something similar). Your toothbrush will last SO much longer.

Don’t brush hard! This is universal – meaning this goes for all tooth brushers out there, not just those using WooBamboo. There’s no need to punish your gums and your tooth enamel, and any dentist will tell you the same thing: Harder isn’t better. Brushing softer will still clean plaque from your teeth and massage your gums, without irritating your sensitive tissue and cutting the lifespan from your bristles. All-in-all, a good strategy.

Don’t keep it anywhere near your toilet! Yeah, this one’s a little gross – but uncomfortably true. Every flush of your toilet triggers a mini atom bombish-type explosion of bacteria that showers down on everything within a general 6 foot radius. That’s right, it’s like a tiny Pompeii in your bathroom. What helps? close the lid before you trigger the ol’ flusharoo.

Change your brush after two months. Okay, honestly, you could go a lot longer. But it’s best not to. No matter how clean and dry you keep your brush, and even though bamboo is anti-microbial, bacteria will still win in the end. So for OPTIMAL cleanliness, swap it out every 2 months.

Swap your brush after you’re sick. Another biggie. When you’re sick, tons of germs hang out in your saliva. It’s just a fun place to be if you’re a microbe. Changing your brush after you’re sickness passes is just a smart thing to do, since (like we mentioned above) no matter HOW well you clean your brush, bacteria wins. And after you’re sick, your toothbrush is a tiki-torch of tiny germy terrorists. Don’t let them win.

Enjoy. That’s right. It’s all about havin’ fun, bein’ green, and doin’ the job right. Take your time when you brush. Enjoy the process. Let your morning brush be a time to remind yourself of all the things you want to accomplish during the day, and let your nightly brush be a time to (more times than not) marvel at how little of the things you wanted to get done actually happened, and put a strategy together for the next round. In all seriousness, brushing is super important – and we’re thrilled and honored that you’re trusting this task to your WooBamboo. Cheers, everybody.

 About the Company
WooBamboo started because we wanted to create an innovative product that was universal, simple to use, and required little to no change of daily routine. We wanted something that would inspire people to continue to make small, eco-friendly steps in the right direction. We decided on a toothbrush. That way, every morning and every night you’d be reminded that you made a good decision for the planet, and that you have the power to make more.

That’s what it’s about. Small changes towards a much greater good. WOOBAMBOO: Innovate. Inspire. Change the world.

Alcohol Spotlight: Nuvino Malbec Wine in a Pouch

Maipú, Mendoza 2013 – 14.5% ABV

Nestled in the eastern foothills of the majestic Andes mountains, Mendoza’s Maipú wine region features some of the highest vineyards in the world (750 meters above sea level). Our Malbec thrives in these unparalleled conditions, which yield a deep violet wine that explodes with plum, black currant and vanilla notes. You can’t go wrong pairing this bold, fruity wine with your favorite steak, barbecue ribs or spicy-sweet dishes.

Sunsets, starry nights, and secret spots are enhanced with this savory wine.

- Single Serve – 1 glass portion (187ml)
- Convenient – Light, portable, unbreakable
- Easy to Open – No corkscrew! Easy to pour
- Resealable – Sip or pour and re-close
- Great wine – from four celebrated wine regions
- Preserv Pak – Eco-friendly + preserves wines

Let’s just say this is what we call our secret weapon.

Not that we’re going into battle or anything but when you’re packing, it’s always good to know that you’re covered.

PreservPak is the technology that enables our wine to handle any adventure you throw at it. More importantly, it locks in and preserves all the nuances of our four distinct wines for up to 18 months while imparting no flavor profile of its own. All that’s left is great wine for discriminating drinkers who are thirsty for adventure.

Comparing a wine bottle next to a Nuvino pouch is like a 80s cell phone next to your smart phone – it gets the job done but you can’t fit it in your pocket. We like what technology has done with our phones. You’ll love what technology has done with our wine.

About the Company
Have wine. Will travel.

Typically, those two thoughts haven’t paired very well together. Bulky, breakable wine bottles aren’t exactly the best travel buddies. Wine is like the friend you’d invite over for dinner but never leave the house with because they’re too fragile in new environments.

It’s time for a new friend.

Nuvino is as agile, adventurous, and as adaptable as you are. In fact, not only can Nuvino go wherever your curious heart will take you, it will make new environments even more memorable as you savor both the journey and the destination.

Packaging Spotlight: Redesigned Consumer Packaging Disappears To Eliminate Waste

Designed by
Aaron Mickelson

Every year, we throw away a ton of packaging waste (actually, over 70 million tons). It makes up the single largest percentage of trash in our landfills (beating out industrial waste, electronics, food… everything). Figures released by the EPA indicate this problem is getting worse every year.

As a package designer (and grad student—meaning I know everything and can solve every problem, naturally), I was concerned about where this trend is going. Of course, many talented designers working in the field have made great efforts over the past few years to reduce the amount of packaging that goes onto a product. However, for my Masters Thesis, I asked the question: Can we eliminate that waste entirely?

The five solutions presented by this website are my answer to that question. I realize each presents its own manufacturing or distribution challenge; however, each also presents opportunities available to package designers right now.

I wanted to start a conversation. I’d love to know what you think.

Tide PODs
The package itself is a sheet of laundry pods stitched together, printed using soap-soluble ink. The POD plastic is, just like in the existing product, water-soluble. Consumers tear off each POD and use one-by-one. With the last POD, the package itself is gone.

PODs, instead of being stored loose, are stitched together into a perforated sheet. Product details and brand information are then printed directly onto this sheet. All inks are water-soluble, and dissolve in the wash (just like soap dyes).

The customer tears off PODs one-at-a-time as needed, simply tossing the POD directly into the wash. All parts of the packaging dissolve safely. When the last POD has been used, the package is gone. No waste to throw away.

OXO POP Containers

Brand identity, marketing material and product details are all screen-printed directly on to the surface of the container with soap-soluble inks. Everyone washes food containers before use; that same act now disappears the package.

The same information—OXO’s brand mark, the product name and details, and a depiction of what might be stored inside—is printed directly on the surface of the container. In deference to this printing technique, all graphics and text are solid, single colors.

The ink used is not water-soluble, but soap-soluble, so it washes away with soapy water. Because this product is used for food storage, it’s likely the consumer would wash it first anyway. In this process, the “label” breaks down completely and is safe both for the environment and for septic.

Twinings Tea Bags
Individual tea packets, wax-lined for freshness, are perforated together and folded up accordion style. This provides a new opportunity to expand on the marketing material present on the package, and to eliminate unnecessary waste.

With the added surface area and the storybook-quality of the accordion packaging, the manufacturer has a new opportunity to provide information or a story to the consumer.

The consumer unsticks and tears off tea bags one-at-a-time, with each second bag revealing a new spread. The folder itself becomes the hanging tag. With the last tea bag, the package is eliminated.

Every solution features an insignia that both identifies it as a Disappearing Package (building brand recognition) and clearly instructs the consumer on how to disappear it.

NIVEA Bar Soap
The package is a septic-safe, water-soluble paper. Consumers take the whole package into the shower with them. When it gets wet, it dissolves, leaving no packaging behind.

The packaging seems familiar—essentially appearing as a paper box. But there are two primary differences: First, the shape, which was developed to prevent the consumer from absentmindedly tearing open the package. They shouldn’t open it because (Second) the paper is water-soluble and designed to stay on.

The substrate functions just like normal paper—it can be printed on and embossed, as in this solution—until it is exposed to water. When the consumer takes it into the shower, the non-toxic material 100% dissolves and washes down the drain.

GLAD Trash Bags
Product information and a refreshed Glad logo are printed with traditional oil-based inks on the last trash bag in the roll, which is no longer kept in a box. The last bag is the package itself, leaving no extra trash when it gets used.

In this refresh, visual elements are limited to the most important information: the brand, the style and size of the product, and the number included. This information is all printed directly on the last bag, which holds the others together, and eliminates the need for an extra layer of packaging.

Bags are pulled from the center and used, one-by-one. The label is printed on the last bag with traditional oil-based inks, so it will remain permanent until the end. This bag carries the product information, reminding the consumer what they need to get more of.

Tech Spotlight: Vending Machine Bottles Water Right Before It’s Served

Run by Eliza Becton and co-founders Sean Grundy and Frank Lee, Refresh Water Technologies is a startup formed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop the eco-friendly vending machine Refresh.

Refresh is a water vending machine that filters and bottles water from the tap on-site instead of carrying pre-filled bottles that come from a bottling plant.

The Refresh kiosk filters, flavors, carbonates, and bottles water at the point of use, instead of in a bottling plant. We cut vending
operators' variable costs and CO2 emissions by 80%.
