Food Spotlight: Canadian Cricket Protein Company Launches on Kickstarter

Canadian Start-up, Coast Protein, hits their $20,000 Kickstarter goal in less than 72 Hours.

VANCOUVER, March 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ - Coast Protein, Western Canada's first cricket protein company launched their crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter and hit their goal in less than 72 hours. The company plans to scale production, improve packaging, and add cricket protein powders for smoothies to their product offering.

The Vancouver start-up currently sells small-batch cricket protein bars to various retailers across British Columbia. Available in two flavours: Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Raisin, Coast Protein locally produces around 1,000 cricket protein bars by hand every week. They are now ready to take their production to the next level and expand into the United States.

"We've found that crickets contain more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach, making them the ideal candidate for protein powder in shakes and smoothies. We've seen other healthy food trends like juicing, kombucha, and farm-to-table take off in North America and we believe that cricket protein is next," said Chris Baird, Marketing Director of Coast Protein.

Being that crickets are a complete protein, they provide a nutritional alternative to heavily processed proteins. Crickets have a full amino acid profile and are environmentally friendly. Compared to cows, crickets require 2,000 times less water, produce 100 times less methane gas, and use a fraction the land for the same pound of protein.

"The problem with insects isn't the science, nutrition, or taste – they just have an image problem, and we have the ability to change that," said John Larigakis, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Coast Protein.

Coast Protein's cricket protein bars and powders are now available in a variety of flavours on Kickstarter until March 31st, and at select retailers across British Columbia. They have partnered with a tree planting company in British Columbia to personally plant 10,000 trees this coming June. If they hit their stretch goal of $30,000 they will produce their 3rd flavour of protein bar: Cranberry Ginger.

About the company

By 2050 the world’s population will reach over 9 billion and all of us will be hungry. How will we fare? Who will feed us and how?

We three Goldin brothers, Darren, Ryan and Jarrod, have always been close to nature from our earliest memories of water skiing along the beautiful river in our homeland of South Africa. Our initial connection and eventual love of the environment stemmed from the example of our father, Alan, whose respect for the Earth was exemplary.

He and our mother, Loraine, integrated their passion for the Earth into mealtimes which became not only physically nutritious but also spiritually profound times of appreciation for the food we shared, the resources that brought it to our table, and for each other. We are grateful to them for setting us onto the path of global awareness and ways to impact others through our service to the Earth.

It is through this awareness, and passionate conversation with one another, that brought the genesis of Entomo Farms- producing insect protein as a viable, and altruistic response to the global crises; (food, water, natural resources) that will imminently be upon us.

About the company:

They arrived in two shoebox-sized containers. And they were very, very loud. We wanted to find out if we could make a food product using insects that actually tasted good. Armed with Google research, a vague recipe for cricket flour, an oven, and a blender, it was time to walk the walk...

Gabi had created a basic protein bar recipe while on his own quest to make a snack both healthy and delicious, prompted by his frustration at the nutrition-taste tradeoff marring everything commercially available. The idea to add insects came when Greg, one of Gabi’s five college roommates, attended a conference at MIT on the breakdown of global systems that sparked a conversation about insects’ tremendous environmental benefits relative to other food sources. He intuitively understood that only by combining insects with something more familiar—protein bars, for example—could people here be convinced to eat them. Read More

WHY INSECTS

Health
Insects are exceptionally nutritious. They are high in protein and low in saturated fats and sugars. They are a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids, and are also high in micronutrients such as iron, calcium and B-vitamins. Crickets, for example, contain substantially more iron than beef.

Sustainability
Insects have marginal environmental impact. They produce virtually no methane, reproduce extremely quickly, and require minimal feed, water and space. It is estimated that crickets are 20x more efficient to raise for protein than cattle. Read More

Why Eat Insects?

whyeat

For centuries, human civilizations have rightly considered insects an excellent, plentiful and resource-efficient source of protein. Even today, 80 percent of the world's people regularly munch edible insects as part of their normal diets – chapulines in Mexico, stir-fried red tree ants in Cambodia, inago (grasshoppers) and hachinoko (bee larvae) in Japan and casu marzu in Italy. And with good reason &mdash eating insects provides an incredibly rich source of protein, iron and omega-3 acids and are very low in cholesterols and fat. Read More

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Exo: Protein Bars Made from Cricket Flour

Exo uses a revolutionary protein source, cricket flour, that is exceptionally nutritious and uniquely sustainable.

TechCrunch: "Last night, I’m happy to say, I tried a new protein bar that was sufficiently tasty, didn’t raise my blood sugar, and was packed with raw healthy ingredients."

Forbes: "Want to help solve the global food crisis? Eat more crickets"

Greatist: "Downright tasty"

Fast Co.Exist: "A better protein bar"

10g bioavailable protein. All-natural. Gluten/grain/soy/dairy free. Made in America.

Exo will introduce to the West one of the most nutritious and sustainable protein sources in the world: insects. Through combining cricket flour (slow roasted and milled crickets) with organic and all-natural ingredients such as raw cacao, dates, almond butter and coconut, we have created a bar that is high in protein, low in sugar, incredibly nutritionally dense, and packed with omega 3 fatty acids, iron and calcium. Our bars are free of: unnatural sugars, gluten, grains, dairy, soy, artificial preservatives and anything processed.

cricket

Why Crickets?

Health

Crickets are exceptionally nutritious. They are high in protein (69% by dry weight) and contain all the essential amino acids. They are also high in micronutrients: crickets have more iron than beef and almost as much calcium as milk.

cricketgraph

Sustainability

Insect protein represents the first viable solution to the global food crisis. Crickets need 12x less feed than cattle, 4x less feed than sheep, and half as much feed as pigs and chickens to produce the same amount of protein. They produce 80x less methane than cattle, can reproduce much quicker, and barely require any water or space.

Global Popularity

If eating insects seems strange, consider that 80% of the world already does it.

Our story

We are Gabi Lewis and Greg Sewitz, college roommates and co-founders of Exo, which we started during our senior year at Brown University. Gabi has an obsession with everything health related—from paleolithic nutrition to powerlifting—and was searching for a snack that would satisfy his high nutritional standards. He couldn’t find one. Greg, having just returned from a conference at MIT hosted by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on climate change and resource scarcity, suggested insects as a protein source. After much iteration—and a few runaway crickets—we created a bar that fulfilled each of our original goals. Exo was born.
Where we are

We have a solid team, rock star advisors and a three star Michelin chef who was Head of R&D at The Fat Duck Restaurant in England, one of the best restaurants in the world. Our recipe has received phenomenal reviews at CrossFit gyms and on university campuses. We have a basic website. Our packaging supplier and commercial kitchen are lined up. We're ready to go.
What we need

We need your help raising $20,000 to create our first batch of commercially produced bars. This covers ingredients, packaging, production, kitchen rental and legal costs.
