About the company

I’m Christine Spliid, originally from Denmark but now based in London. CROBAR cricket flour energy bars started as an idea which combines my passion for endurance running, healthy food, travelling and sometimes, the unconventional.

I have travelled to more than 40 countries, and was fascinated with the number of people in especially South East Asia, who eat insects on a daily basis. Many of the insects look similar to shrimps, so it did seem strange that eating insects is almost unheard of in the West. Learning about the health benefits let me to explore the idea of introducing insects back at home, and having studied Psychology & Business at Warwick University, I was immediately fascinated with the challenge of changing people’s perceptions and attitudes towards eating insects.

The result: UK’s first cricket flour energy bars, which I named Crobar; ‘Cr’ for crickets, ‘cro’ rhyming with pro for protein, and the association with the tool crowbar.

It is indisputable that current meat production is unsustainable, and we need to seriously look at other food and protein sources. Farming insects is much more sustainable than farming cattle and chicken, and there is no rational reason why we don’t already eat insects in the West.

By making the crickets into flour, it becomes an extremely versatile ingredient, which can be used not just in cricket flour energy bars, but in so many recipes. There are more than 2000 edible insect species available, and the kind of food products that could incorporate insect flour is only limited by your imagination.

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Cricket Brownie Mix: Organic, Gluten Free & Cricket Flours!

Introducing the World's First Cricket Brownie!

Our new Cricket Brownie Mix is crafted using gluten free organic flours and cricket powder to create a delicious dessert with TWICE the protein compared to other brownie mixes.  We started with our family's recipe for a delectable brownie and added a sustainable and environmentally friendly source of protein from crickets to create a new brownie with less sugar, less calories, and more protein and nutrition.

We launched our company crafting small batches of our first products and selling directly to customers and small natural health food stores across the US.  But now we need your help to start production for a larger product for our Cricket Brownie Mix to meet the growing demand and to launch in stores near you!

Our new Cricket Brownie Mix comes in our signature chocolate flavor that is dairy free and made with organic Peruvian cocoa powder and gluten free flours.  These delightful brownies contain double the protein of leading brownie mix brands with 2g of protein per serving in addition to vitamins and minerals.

The crickets in the brownie mix are milled into a fine flour before adding them to our crafted ingredients.  Each delectable Cricket Brownie has over 12 crickets per brownie, a rich chocolate taste, and are a great source of protein, Vitamin A, Calcium, and more.  The packaged mix comes ready to bake and just needs a few simple ingredients to get started:

We launched Cricket Flours a little over a year ago to craft new products using crickets as a sustainable source of protein and nutrition. Our family first began baking and experimenting with gluten free recipes about 15 years ago when my mother was first diagnosed with a gluten allergy. A lot of the products on store shelves just wouldn’t work with our dietary restrictions. However, when I was diagnosed with similar dietary restrictions I started looking for new options and came across crickets as viable source of protein and nutrition and founded the company.

Crickets are a great source of sustainable nutrition and are able to use less water, and less feed, to create more protein than many traditional protein sources. Crickets are naturally high in protein, iron, calcium, Vitamin B12, Omega-3s and Omega-6s without any additional nutrients and minerals. Our crickets are all raised in North America for human consumption and milled into our cricket powder. However, not many people have tried crickets or have tried baking with them.

When we learned how our customers love to make and share this new cricket ingredient with their friends and family, we knew we were on to something.  We wanted to make an easy to use product for those looking to add more protein to their meals, desserts, or for those excited to try crickets for the first time!

We need $25,000 to bring our new Cricket Brownie Mix to market and into stores near you!  This project will help to cover the initial costs for the ingredients, packaging, manufacturing, and production of our new Cricket Brownie Mix.

WHY INSECTS

Health
Insects are exceptionally nutritious. They are high in protein and low in saturated fats and sugars. They are a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids, and are also high in micronutrients such as iron, calcium and B-vitamins. Crickets, for example, contain substantially more iron than beef.

Sustainability
Insects have marginal environmental impact. They produce virtually no methane, reproduce extremely quickly, and require minimal feed, water and space. It is estimated that crickets are 20x more efficient to raise for protein than cattle. Read More

About the company:

They arrived in two shoebox-sized containers. And they were very, very loud. We wanted to find out if we could make a food product using insects that actually tasted good. Armed with Google research, a vague recipe for cricket flour, an oven, and a blender, it was time to walk the walk...

Gabi had created a basic protein bar recipe while on his own quest to make a snack both healthy and delicious, prompted by his frustration at the nutrition-taste tradeoff marring everything commercially available. The idea to add insects came when Greg, one of Gabi’s five college roommates, attended a conference at MIT on the breakdown of global systems that sparked a conversation about insects’ tremendous environmental benefits relative to other food sources. He intuitively understood that only by combining insects with something more familiar—protein bars, for example—could people here be convinced to eat them. Read More

Why Eat Insects?

whyeat

For centuries, human civilizations have rightly considered insects an excellent, plentiful and resource-efficient source of protein. Even today, 80 percent of the world's people regularly munch edible insects as part of their normal diets – chapulines in Mexico, stir-fried red tree ants in Cambodia, inago (grasshoppers) and hachinoko (bee larvae) in Japan and casu marzu in Italy. And with good reason &mdash eating insects provides an incredibly rich source of protein, iron and omega-3 acids and are very low in cholesterols and fat. Read More
