Coffee Spotlight: Mayorga Organics Disrupts the Ground Coffee Category

MIAMI, June 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Nationally-recognized leader in sustainably-sourced specialty organic coffee, Mayorga Organics, is injecting new life into the ground coffee segment. The company has released the first ever organic specialty coffee "brick pack" into the market—containing 10oz of fresh-roasted and ground organic Café Cubano.  Mayorga is importing, roasting, grinding, and packaging this item at its massive new Miami, Florida facility.

"People will tell you that brick packed coffee is low quality, commercial, chemical-laden junk. They're generally right, which is why we knew we had to disrupt the category," states Martin Mayorga, CEO of Mayorga Organics. "There is nothing better than batch roasted specialty grade Arabica coffee and there is no reason why it can't be freshly roasted, ground, and vacuumed into brick packs," he continues. "There is also an element of culture and pride. Many companies market this item to the Latino community on nostalgia and rock bottom prices at the expense of farmer sustainability, environmental considerations, and flavor quality. As a Latino, I find this offensive and outdated. As someone focused on growing a specialty coffee company to support our farmers, communities, and staff, I see a massive opportunity."

When asked about price Mayorga replies, "Specialty grade organic coffee isn't cheap and we have to make sure our producers can continue to grow great coffee. Our brick packs will be at least 45% more expensive than the commercial grade brick packs but the quality difference is night and day.  When compared to other specialty coffees, the value that we're offering consumers is inarguable."

The company is currently offering 10 oz brick packs of espresso ground organic Café Cubano through its own website as it prepares to launch distribution through its current grocery and retail clients while strategically aligning with other Miami retailers and grocers. According to Martin Mayorga, there are plans to offer other "category disrupting" items in the near future.

About Mayorga:

The company's top selling product is organic Café Cubano which Mayorga launched in 2001. Learn more at www.mayorgaorganics.com.

Animal lovers don’t like to go anywhere without their dogs and cats, but public venues aren’t so keen on filling their space with pets — aside from the occasional pet-friendly hotels we’ve seen in the past. Opening this weekend in London, Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium is not only open to cat-lovers, but even has its own resident felines to entertain guests.

Owl Cafes are Trendy in Japan

The concept is straight forward. In main cities many people live in small units and don't have enough space for pets. Cat cafes have proven popular with locals by providing that pet-owner intimacy otherwise unattainable to some. And now owl cafes are meant to offer a similar sort of experience - except that the owls can't be touched. In fact, the owls (like most owls) get scared easily so customers have to behave.

According to Tokyo Times owl cafes like Fukurou no Mise (Owl Shop) and Tori no Iru Cafe (The Cafe with Birds) began gaining popularity in Japan late last year and this summer saw more owl cafes open. Currently there are owl cafes like Fukurou Sabou (Owl Teahouse) in Tokyo, Owl Family in Osaka, and Crew, another owl cafe in Osaka, among others.

McDonald’s Bagged Coffee Hitting Supermarket Aisles In 2014

NEW YORK -- NEW YORK (AP) — Fans of McDonald's coffee will soon be able to brew a cup of it at home.

The world's biggest hamburger chain says it will test selling a variety of packaged ground and whole-bean coffee at supermarkets and other retail outlets starting next year. The test will also include single-cup servings.

McDonald's, based in Oak Brook, Ill., did not disclose any other details. But the company already started selling McCafe packaged coffee in Canada late last year. Those bags weighed about 12 ounces and cost about $7.

McDonald's is teaming up with Kraft Foods Group Inc. to distribute the coffee.

Packaging Spotlight: Alma de Cuba Cafe

Designed by
Big Fish

In the 1940s, Cuba was the world’s biggest exporter of coffee, shipping 20,000 tonnes of beans every year. But then came the revolution and with it a sure and steady decline in production. By 2012, Cuban coffee, once the world’s favourite, was on its knees, and it looked like nothing could save it.

Well, that was before Phillip Oppenheim – a former MP and card-carrying Cubaphile – got together with some old pals to restore Cuban coffee to its rightful place. He asked Big Fish to help with the branding, but they were so impressed, they ended up investing in the business and becoming partners, too.

We came up with the name Alma de Cuba (soul of Cuba) and channeled the spirit of Cuban folk art (via our resident Latin American illustration genius) to create an evocative design scheme which, hopefully, has just as much soul as the coffee itself.

Product Spotlight: BlackStar Cold Pressed Coffee

This is iced coffee but not as you know it. Made directly from freshly roasted and ground coffee this is liquid gold in a brown glass bottle. Serve chilled. You won't regret it.

Blackstar Cold Pressed coffee (CPC) takes the flavour of our roasted coffees and unexpectedly transports them to the world of iced ca!eine. Inspired by long Brisbane summer days, we've developed a range of CPC's. They are - Full Creamy, Soy Deluxe and Total Black.

Thirst quenching, great with food, a serious alternative for when you need ca!eine but its just too hot to sit down to a Latte. With 60% less caffeine than other extraction methods - you can drink at night without concern. Blackstar CPC is sustainably packaged, hand bottled and is made from fair trade and organic ingredients

What exactly is CPC you may be wondering? Firstly, we batch roast the single origin coffees required for the CPC blend. Then we grind and immediately soak these grounds in large brewing vats. Overnight the coffee solids seep slowly into the water. Mysteriously this cold infusion method transfers only the best natural flavours from the coffee, leaving behind the bitter and astringent elements.

Next, we "press/squeeze" the ground coffee using massive muslin sacks hand stitched by our mums. Once separated, the used grounds are then distributed to several of our neighbours for their backyard composting programs. Before bottling we add a touch of vanilla, just the right amount of mexican agave, maleny dairy milk or soy and there it is. A fully natural, artificial-free, preservative-free, fairtrade organic, fresh roasted cold coffee experience. Damn this is good sh*%! Taste it, we made it made for you.
