Fast Food Spotlight: Burger King’s Black Burger

BK Japan's "Kuro Burger" (or "Black Burger") is apparently hitting restaurants there on Sept. 19, according to promotional images shown on the restaurant's Facebook page. The "goth-like" burger, as the Guardian calls it, will feature beef patties coated in black pepper, black cheese and buns made with bamboo charcoal, and an onion-garlic topping made with (wait for it) squid ink, Narinari.com reports via Kotaku.

Fast Food Spotlight: BK Launching Low Calorie ´Satisfries´

US chain BURGER King wants people to feel less guilty about gobbling up its french fries.

The world's No 2 hamburger chain is launching a new crinkle-cut french fry on Tuesday that it says has about 20 per cent fewer calories than its regular fries.

The chain says a small order of the new "Satisfries'' clocks in at 270 calories because of a new batter that doesn't absorb as much oil. By comparison, a small order of its regular fries, sans crinkles, has 340 calories.

The concept of taking an indulgent food and removing some of the guilt isn't new, of course. Supermarkets are filled with baked Lay's potato chips, 100-calorie packs of Oreos and other less fattening versions of popular treats. Such creations play on people's inability to give up their food vices, even as they struggle to eat better. The idea is to create something that skimps on calories, but not on taste.

Burger King executives say people won't be able to tell that Satisfries are lower in calories. It says they use exactly the same ingredients as its regular fries - potatoes, oil and batter. To keep kitchen operations simple, they're even made in the same fryers and cooked for the same amount of time as regular fries.

Burger King Launches Chicken Nuggets Identical to McDonald´s

Fast food chain Burger King continues to revamp it's menu and has announced that from next Monday it will be selling chicken nuggets in orders of four, 10 and 20.

Sound familiar? Well the new product looks a lot like McDonald’s more established McNuggets range, plus BK’s version is almost as nutritious.

A 10-piece order of Burger King’s nuggets will amount to 470 calories and 890 mg of sodium, almost identical to the 470 calories and 900 mg of sodium found in a 10-piece order of McNuggets.

According to Burger King's website, the nuggets are ‘made with premium white meat... tender and juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside.'

The nuggets are coated in a 'flavorful tempura style batter.'

Burger King's crispier nuggets will replace 'chicken tenders'. McNuggets have been a popular feature of McDonald's menu since the 1980s.

After years of decline and stagnation of menu ideas, New York-based private equity firm 3G Capital bought Burger King last year. Since then BK is now on it's third major menu revamp in six months.

The Miami-based fast food chain re-launched as a public company in June and shortly afterwards underwent the biggest menu change in its history. Shortly thereafter, it announced its fall menu, which mostly consisted of new chicken items, including wraps and popcorn chicken.

Earlier this year Wendy's knocked Burger King off the spot as second biggest burger chain. The changes appear to be working and BK is putting real pressure on McDonald's for the first time in years, in part by adding products very similar to those sold by its rival.

'As we move into 2013, we are focused on continuing to deliver best-in-class products to our guests,' global chief marketing officer Flavia Faugeres said in a statement. 'Our new limited-time menu options give guests even more delicious reasons to visit Burger King restaurants in the New Year.'

The nuggets are a permanent addition to the menu, but Burger King's six other new offerings are only available for a limited time. These include a Whopper with avocado and Swiss, cheese-filled tater tots, Philly chicken sandwich, an Italian chicken sandwich breaded and coated with marinara and cheese, and a molten fudge sundae.

Burger King Japan Debuts a Pumpkin Burger

Funny, I thought pumpkin-saturated seasonal fare was an American thing.

Well, turns out our nation’s fascination with autumnal gourds is just another thing we and the rest of the world have in common, with Burger King Japan announcing its new Pumpkin Burger for a limited time, starting October 26.

Granted, the “pumpkin” isn’t your typical tawny squash. Rather, the burger features two slices of kabocha (a green, melon sized winter squash commonly known as “Japanese pumpkin”), along with bacon, lettuce, a beef patty and a creamy sesame seed/peanut/almond/cashew and hazelnut sauce, all in a pumpkin-shaped bun. For an added premium, super punkin’ junkies can also get a “pumpkin bomb” option of 10 slices instead of two.

It is, again, only available for a limited time though, so for any of our Japanese readers, hurry before the clock strikes 12 and this deal turns back into a pumpkin.

Wait . . .

Burger King’s Elusive Tempura Whopper…in Hong Kong

Just when you thought that fast food chains couldn't muck up a proper burger any more than Costa Rica's Queso Fundido Whopper or Singapore's Prosperity McRib, along comes a worth challengers: Burger King's Tempura Whopper Jr.

Tempura...whopper?! Yep, although those two simple words on the menu board are deceiving; it's not the patty of meat that's been tempura-cooked, but instead the regular Whopper gets added to it a patty of tempura'd vegetables, atop the meat. Throw in a drizzle of sweet tempura sauce, and it's all ready to be bitten into at a BK in HK.

Burger King Creates a Bacon Sundae, Tries to Be Trendy

Burger King is the latest to jump on the bacon gravy train and is currently testing a bacon sundae. They're not the first to do this — see Denny's Maple Bacon Sundae and Jack in the Box's Bacon Milkshake. Anyway, not much is known about the BK Bacon Sundae except that it's being tested in Nashville and that it appears to contain actual bacon (unlike that Jack in the Box shake).

What with this and the bacon reality series that was just announced, bacon is in some serious overexposure territory these days. After all we are living in the "Periclean age of bacon."

Burger King Immortalizes Its Cheeseburger In Eyeshadow

Burger King’s latest foray into visual advertising introduces a new wave of possibilities for using makeup and other cosmetics to promote a brand or service. The above image, attributed to Burger King Netherlands, features an artistic rendition of a cheeseburger onto a woman’s closed eye.

A closer look reveals that the contours of the model’s eyes perform specific representations of the burger; for instance, the lid serves as the burger bun, the eyelashes are painted green for the lettuce, while the lower eyelids are colored with dashes of yellow, red, and brown to render the cheese, tomatoes, and burger patty, respectively.
