Beer Spotlight: The loftiest sour beer ever crafted at New Belgium

When the country’s most award-winning sour beer program meets the world’s most exclusive coffee bean, the result is a magical sensory experience unlike anything around

On a normal day, the air in New Belgium’s sprawling wood cellar carries hints of dark, earthy fruit—a delightful aroma for passers-by. But on a particular Friday this past October, those strolling through the cellar were met with a slightly different scent: a delicate, citrusy tea-like aroma courtesy of the world’s most exclusive coffee bean, shipped all the way in from Panama.

At a blending table tucked between towering French-oak foeders, wood cellar director and blender Lauren Woods Limbach was huddled around a variety of partially-filled stemware, tasting versions of the loftiest sour beer ever crafted at New Belgium: La Folie Grand Reserve Geisha, an epic collaboration with local maltster Troubadour Maltings, Fort Collins-based Bean Cycle Roasters, Sustainable Harvest coffee importers, and Panama’s Hacienda la Esmeralda. It’s a bold amalgam. Blending sour Oscar from the wood cellar, a “smuggler” beer from Troubadour, and the highly sought-after Geisha coffee bean, this unique opportunity wasn’t lost on Limbach.

“Having this bean available is pretty amazing,” says Limbach. “It’s the bean that sparked people to rethink coffee, which feels so incredibly relevant to us as craft brewers, so it’s really close to my heart.”

For the uninitiated, the Geisha coffee bean originated in the town of Gesha, Ethiopia, but became internationally famous after it was imported to Panama and produced by Hacienda La Esmerelda. The family-run coffee growers submitted the bean—unique for its citrusy, floral aromatics—into the Best of Panama Auction in 2004, where it won first place. It then went on to win first place five more times between 2005 and 2010, firmly establishing it as the pinnacle bean in the coffee world.

At New Belgium, the Geisha bean provided an interesting challenge: Marrying the bean’s delicate aromatics with the bold character of sour Oscar, the base beer that’s blended into award-winning La Folie Sour Brown Ale. To do so, Fort Collins-based Troubadour Maltings provided malt varieties to brew a special “smuggler” beer—named for the “smuggling in” of essential oils to help promote foam retention in the finished product—which lends rich concord grape character to the final blend, bridging the gap between the fruity, funky notes of Oscar and the delicate, citrusy tea-like notes of the bean.

The result is an exquisite sour beer that leads with the character of the bean, a feat that came with its fair share of anxiety.

“There’s this apprehension to do right by Geisha,” says Limbach. “I’ve thought more about this beer than any beer I’ve made in my life. Not just because of the expense of the coffee, but because we’re attempting to put something that doesn’t have the classic coffee aroma—floral, tea, notes of citrus and stone fruit—into a coffee beer.”

Beer Spotlight: Schlafly Pumpkin Ale

Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today.  Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce.  Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain.  In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

Food Spotlight: Graeter’s Ice Cream and Braxton Brewing Co. Bring Fans First Collaborative Ice Cream Flavor

Cincinnati-Based Brands Bring Beer and Dessert Together to Create Stout & Pretzels Ice Cream

CINCINNATI, OH (September 19, 2017) – Graeter’s Ice Cream, a 147-year-old, family owned craft ice cream company, and Braxton Brewing Co., a local brewing company, introduce first-of-its-kind Stout & Pretzels Ice Cream. This Graeter’s flavor has been inspired by the success found in Graeter’s and Braxton’s previous collaborations – Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Milk Stout and Blueberry Pie Brown Ale. The unique ice cream was previewed at Braxton Brewing Co.’s booth at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati and will be introduced for purchase in Graeter’s scoop shops and online the first week of October.

The one-of-a-kind Stout & Pretzels ice cream is a creatively crafted ice cream influenced by Braxton Brewing Co.’s Dead Blow Tropical Stout. Eighty pounds of macerated dates are brewed with a Dry English Ale yeast to provide a vibrant, fruity and tropical aroma with a subtle amount of fruity esters. Dead Blow is a dry, full bodied, smooth stout that is lighter on bitterness.

Similarly, Graeter’s Stout & Pretzels ice cream will mimic the flavorful notes found in Braxton’s brew to create an ice cream with crunchy pretzels to compliment each distinct note. This sweet treat will only be available for purchase for a limited time.

“Having partnered with Braxton Brewing Co. on this year’s Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Milk Stout as well as the Blueberry Pie Brown Ale, it’s exciting to be able to turn the tables and incorporate Dead Blow into a new ice cream creation,” shares Robert Graeter, 4th generation co-owner and Chief of Quality Assurance at Graeter’s Ice Cream. “As true craft brands, we are both passionate about and committed to preserving our authenticity in each new culinary adventure.”

"We’re a proud Cincinnati brand, and it’s wonderful to be able to surprise and delight both Braxton and Graeter’s fans through this collaboration," said Jake Rouse, Co-Founder and CEO. "From concept to creation, it’s always a thrill to be able to be a part of something that we know will bring a smile to consumers’ faces, as we know Graeter’s new Stout & Pretzels Ice Cream will."

Regina Graeter’s original recipes and old-world French Pot process have stood the test of time – even as mass-produced ice cream floods the market. This innovative collaboration between Graeter’s Ice Cream and Braxton Brewing Co. is an ode to her time-tested recipes, taken to an even higher level by the addition of Braxton Brewing Co.’s passion for crafting the perfect beer.

About Graeter’s
Graeter’s Ice Cream produces craft ice cream using the small batch, artisanal, French Pot process, dating back over a century. Graeter’s has won the hearts of ice cream enthusiasts across the country as well as the respect of the nation’s most influential foodies. Winner of the 2015 Munchie Award for best ice cream in the United States, and publicly recognized by celebrities, People Magazine and local magazines as the city’s “best ice cream”, the Cincinnati-based company remains family-owned and operated and continues to handcraft ice cream 2½ gallons at a time. Today, Graeter’s has more than 50 retail stores and ship over 300,000 pints annually for online mail order sales. Graeter’s can also be found in more than 6,000 grocery stores in 46 states. About the company

Anderson Valley Brewing Company was founded on December 26th, 1987 in the town of Boonville, CA. In the beginning, we brewed out of a modest 10-barrel brewhouse located in the lower level of our original brewpub, The Buckhorn Saloon. At the time, we were one of only 20 craft breweries in the country and have long been considered one of the pioneers of the craft beer industry.

By 1996, the demand for our award winning ales exceeded the capacity of our 10-barrel brewery, so we started construction on our current facility at the corner of Highways 128 and 253, just one mile down the road from the Buckhorn Saloon. Surrounded by rolling hills peppered with century-old oaks to the west and towering redwood forests to the east, our 26-acre property houses a 100-barrel brewhouse, tasting room, beer garden, and is home to the first 18-hole disc golf course ever to be built at a brewery. About the company

Weyerbacher Brewing was founded in 1995 in a livery stable in downtown Easton, Pennsylvania. What began as a daydream in an avid homebrewer’s head has grown to the craft brewery that you know and love.

While trying to find our niche in the sea of craft that existed, we decided to explore BIG beers that would set us apart from the others. It was then, after brewing beers including Blithering Idiot and Merry Monks, our path in this industry became clear – making big, full-flavored, high quality brews.

From our humble beginnings in the livery stable to our approximately 30,000 square foot facility, we have always looked to push the envelope of taste experiences, obliterate style guidelines and have a blast while we’re at it!
