Beer News: 19 Crimes launches beer in the US

OAKLAND, Calif., March 5, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The hugely popular 19 Crimes wine brand is poised to launch three craft beers in the US on March 1st — an India Pale Ale, a Pilsner and a Lager.

"19 Crimes is in its sixth year of phenomenal growth in the US, with sales exceeding two million cases," states Michelle Terry, CMO of Treasury Wine Estates. "We know that our 19 Crimes wine lovers also highly index as consumers of craft beer. There is so much opportunity with this brand, and our retailers and customers have been asking us to expand into other alcohol beverages."

All 19 Crimes beers ($12.99 SRP per 6 pack) will be available in cans with labels featuring the familiar faces of John Boyle O'Reilly, Michael Harrington and Cornelius Dwyer Kane, meaning the augmented reality will also work on the cans. The beers will be tested in Ohio initially and will expand to more states in the US by the end of the year.

The Pilsner is made in a refreshing style with a medium dry finish. The India Pale Ale is a modern American IPA that is approachable yet complex and the Lager is clean and crisp, balancing bready malts with Old World and New World hop flavor.

19 Crimes was the first wine brand to bring augmented reality to the convicts turned colonists on the labels. Each rogue pictured comes to life to tell their unique story through the Living Wine Labels app.

You can download the Living Wine Labels app from the Apple app store and Google Play Store.

19 Crimes turned convicts into colonists. In 18th-century Britain, criminals guilty of at least one of the 19 crimes, were sentenced to live in Australia, rather than death. For the rough-hewn prisoners who made it to shore, a new world awaited. As pioneers in a frontier penal colony, they forged a new country and new lives, brick by brick. Today, 19 Crimes wines celebrate the rebellious spirit of the more than 160 ,000 exiled men and women, the rule breakers and law defying citizens that forged a new culture and national spirit in Australia.

Beer Spotlight: The loftiest sour beer ever crafted at New Belgium

When the country’s most award-winning sour beer program meets the world’s most exclusive coffee bean, the result is a magical sensory experience unlike anything around

On a normal day, the air in New Belgium’s sprawling wood cellar carries hints of dark, earthy fruit—a delightful aroma for passers-by. But on a particular Friday this past October, those strolling through the cellar were met with a slightly different scent: a delicate, citrusy tea-like aroma courtesy of the world’s most exclusive coffee bean, shipped all the way in from Panama.

At a blending table tucked between towering French-oak foeders, wood cellar director and blender Lauren Woods Limbach was huddled around a variety of partially-filled stemware, tasting versions of the loftiest sour beer ever crafted at New Belgium: La Folie Grand Reserve Geisha, an epic collaboration with local maltster Troubadour Maltings, Fort Collins-based Bean Cycle Roasters, Sustainable Harvest coffee importers, and Panama’s Hacienda la Esmeralda. It’s a bold amalgam. Blending sour Oscar from the wood cellar, a “smuggler” beer from Troubadour, and the highly sought-after Geisha coffee bean, this unique opportunity wasn’t lost on Limbach.

“Having this bean available is pretty amazing,” says Limbach. “It’s the bean that sparked people to rethink coffee, which feels so incredibly relevant to us as craft brewers, so it’s really close to my heart.”

For the uninitiated, the Geisha coffee bean originated in the town of Gesha, Ethiopia, but became internationally famous after it was imported to Panama and produced by Hacienda La Esmerelda. The family-run coffee growers submitted the bean—unique for its citrusy, floral aromatics—into the Best of Panama Auction in 2004, where it won first place. It then went on to win first place five more times between 2005 and 2010, firmly establishing it as the pinnacle bean in the coffee world.

At New Belgium, the Geisha bean provided an interesting challenge: Marrying the bean’s delicate aromatics with the bold character of sour Oscar, the base beer that’s blended into award-winning La Folie Sour Brown Ale. To do so, Fort Collins-based Troubadour Maltings provided malt varieties to brew a special “smuggler” beer—named for the “smuggling in” of essential oils to help promote foam retention in the finished product—which lends rich concord grape character to the final blend, bridging the gap between the fruity, funky notes of Oscar and the delicate, citrusy tea-like notes of the bean.

The result is an exquisite sour beer that leads with the character of the bean, a feat that came with its fair share of anxiety.

“There’s this apprehension to do right by Geisha,” says Limbach. “I’ve thought more about this beer than any beer I’ve made in my life. Not just because of the expense of the coffee, but because we’re attempting to put something that doesn’t have the classic coffee aroma—floral, tea, notes of citrus and stone fruit—into a coffee beer.”

Beer Spotlight: Schlafly Pumpkin Ale

Our Pumpkin Ale blends the spices of the harvest with full-bodied sweetness for a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. Pounds of pumpkin form a malty foundation that supports the fall flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

While pumpkin beers were produced in the early days of the American colonies, they were different from the pumpkin beers we know today.  Colonists used pumpkin and squash as the fermenting medium, since malted barley was scarce.  Once malt became more readily available, it replaced these alternatives to grain.  In the 1990’s, American craft brewers reintroduced the style to the delight of pumpkin beer drinkers.

About the company

When we opened in 1991, we had no business plan beyond wanting to make great beer and food in a fun atmosphere and enjoy it with our community. To this day, our goals remain unchanged.

The Saint Louis Brewery™, maker of Schlafly Beer is proud to be Missouri’s largest locally owned independent brewery. Each year, we brew over fifty unique styles of fresh beer, roughly half of which we bottle and half of which are exclusively available on draft at our two brewery-restaurants. We have a unique beer style for every beer lover, and hope you’ll enjoy our selections at your favorite local stores, restaurants, and bars. Read More
