Drink Spotlight: Arla Whey Protein Iced Coffee

Real coffee and whey protein make a great team in stable, long-life iced coffee
Millennials love iced coffee. In the US, market research by Mintel has found that 66% of these young adult consumers drink iced coffee regularly. As today’s protein megatrend continues, it’s no surprise to see the first iced coffee products with added protein on the market.
Now a new opportunity has emerged to build on that market development. Application specialists at Arla Foods Ingredients have developed a way to combine real coffee with pure, top quality whey protein, in a high-protein, long-life RTD beverage.

That’s special – not only because the use of protein exclusively from whey is a technical challenge in a high-protein UHT drink. When you add real coffee on top, the drink typically becomes unstable.

Stable, delicious and nutritious
With our solution, these challenges are overcome. RTD manufacturers can use a direct UHT process to produce a protein iced coffee that is both stable and delicious.
The high content of whey protein gives consumers the nutritional benefit of essential amino acids that the body can easily digest and absorb.

Room for innovation
Right now, world coffee consumption is at an all-time high, and the International Coffee Organization expects consumption to rise another 25% between 2015 and 2020.
That creates plenty of room for more new innovations. So why not check out our new concept for whey protein iced coffee? It’s a rich source of protein, a source of calcium and fibre, and a convenient on-the-go snack.

Dairy Spotlight: Arla Foods Launches Quark Line

The secret is out with the launch of Arla Quark, the fat-free cheese ideal for cooking

Arla Foods, the farmer-owned dairy company has continued its expansion of its Arla brand portfolio with the launch of Arla Quark – the relatively unknown but fastest growing cheese category in UK.

The soft cheese is very well-known in Europe, but has taken hold in the UK amongst consumers looking to low fat, tasty, alternatives for ingredients such as ricotta, mascarpone and other soft cheeses.

James Prentice, Senior Brand Manager, Arla Foods UK Cheese Team: “With health and wellbeing so much on the agenda and the growing popularity of quark as a healthy ingredient to cook with, we believe Arla Quark is launching at just the right time to capitalise on this trend.”

Prentice added: “Arla Quark is the perfect example of Arla’s commitment to provide healthy innovation from milk and the cheese team has further plans for more Arla branded cheese innovation in the future.”

Quark is still a relatively unknown ingredient and a bit of a mystery to many, so this new Quark range from Arla is designed to highlight the benefits of Quark and signpost its usage – simple recipe suggestions are included on the inside of the carton for example. In November, Arla is launching a range of 30 second online videos with quick, easy and healthy recipes using Arla Quark.

Since the introduction of the Arla brand in 2015, Arla has launched a wide range of innovative and healthier dairy products including Arla Best of Both, Arla skyr and Arla Protein into categories including fresh milk, drinks and yogurts. Earlier in the year, Arla announced its Strategy 2020 in which it committed to extend the pipeline of healthier dairy products with at least 30 new dairy concepts and 50 new range extensions.

Arla Quark launched onto the shelves of Asda from October 17. It is available in three varieties – Plain (500g), Cherry Tomato & Basil (250g) and Garlic & Herb (250g)

Dairy Spotlight: Arla BOB milk

Best of Both (AKA B.O.B.) is a new little ray of sunshine in the dairy aisle. Glug it, pour it, splash it or dash it, safe in the knowledge that B.O.B. has the fat of skimmed milk but is as tasty as semi skimmed milk.

Nutritional values per 100 g
- Energy 175 kJ/41 kcal
- Fat 0.4 g of which is saturated 0.1 g
- Carbohydrate 4.9 g of which is sugars 4.9 g
- Protein 4.7 g
- Salt 0.1 g

Arla, the UK’s largest dairy company, is launching a unique and new branded milk product: Arla ‘Best of Both’ (Arla BOB®); fat-free1 milk that tastes as good as semi-skimmed, packaged with a distinctive yellow top.

The farmer-owned dairy cooperative has spent three years developing the technology to produce Arla BOB. It involves collecting some of the naturally occurring protein2 in milk and carefully adding more of it back into skimmed milk to deliver a taste and texture that is as good as semi-skimmed3 and fat-free. In addition, with Arla’s unique PurFiltreTM process, it also lasts longer in the fridge.

The launch of Arla BOB will be supported by a £7 million integrated marketing campaign designed to announce the product with bursts of ‘yellow’ across all consumer touch points. Featuring a national TV and shopper marketing campaign as well as 48 sheets, six sheets, press, digital and social media plus sampling and PR.

At a time when the UK Government is encouraging consumers to consider their eating and drinking habits, Arla BOB is set to rewrite the rules on what milk drinkers can expect from the traditionally blue, green and red-topped milk aisle.

The launch is part of Arla’s drive to support its farmer owners and become a leading household brand by adding value to its milk, through the development of innovative products, with a focus on the inherent naturalness of dairy. It follows on from the successful launch of Arla Protein, Arla Skyr and Arla Big Milk last year. Through 2016, it will also unveil further innovative products as well as range extensions across the dairy portfolio.

Arla BOB will be available in retailers nationwide from 11 January in 2-litre (rsp: £1.50) and 1-litre formats (rsp: £1).
Sarah Baldwin, Vice President, Marketing, Arla Foods UK, comments:

“We are perfectly positioned to launch something genuinely pioneering and Arla Best of Both is one of the biggest innovations we’ve created in the milk category. Our innovation strategy is to develop great tasting and healthier products whilst investing to help drive consumer understanding of dairy which we feel is part of our responsibility.

“With organisations like Public Health England encouraging people to consider drinking lower fat milks, we believe Arla BOB will be a popular choice for many consumers.”

According to recent research conducted for Arla, 49% of semi-skimmed buyers say they would buy skimmed milk but don’t like the texture and 33% would buy skimmed but don’t like the taste1.

1 Fat-free - the product contains no more than 0, 5 g of fat per 100 g or 100 ml”. This is a directive from the EFSA (European Food Standards Agency)

2 Protein is 4.7g for 100ml and 9.4g for 200ml. Standard fresh skimmed milk ranges between is 3.4-3.6g per 100ml and 6.8 – 7.2g per 200 ml

3Leatherhead Food Research September 2015. Based on statistically valid comparative taste test results with 208 regular consumers of fresh semi skimmed milk.

Dairy Spotlight: Arla Big Milk

Arla big milk is a fresh milk
enriched with essential nutrients for Growing little ones.

Arla Big Milk is whole cows’ milk, finely filtered for freshness and enriched with key vitamins and minerals. Containing iron which contributes to cognitive development, vitamin D for normal bone development and naturally rich in calcium for the development of strong bones and teeth, Arla Big Milk has been developed to meet the needs of children aged from one to five, as part of a healthy diet. The department of health recommends that, from the age of one, children move onto fresh cows’ milk, as well as supplementing their diets with daily vitamins A and D and iron, so Arla has developed Big Milk to support both needs for toddlers.

Vitamins & Nutrients

About Vitamin A
Vitamin A is usually found in animal food sources, such as meat, fish and dairy products as well as some plant based sources, like sweet potato, spinach and carrots.

It can be difficult for toddlers and young children to get enough vitamin A through diet alone, so parents should consider fortified products, combined with a well-balanced diet.

About Vitamin D
Vitamin D is produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight. It can also be obtained from vitamin D-rich foods, such as oily fish and eggs. If your child isn’t keen on these, then supplementing his or her diet with fortified products, such as Arla Big Milk, is a good alternative.

How much Vitamin D does your child need?
It’s hard for toddlers to get the vitamin D they need from their diet. Health experts recommend a daily intake of 400 International Units (IUs) but when, for example, 1 large egg only contains 40 IUs, it’s easy to see how a shortfall could potentially arise. In 2012 Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health recommended that the UK food industry should follow its counterparts in other countries, and explore the fortification of foods and milk with Vitamin D.
