Effects of Recovery Beverages on Glycogen Restoration and Endurance Exercise Performance
In this study eight endurance-trained cyclists were each given high carbohydrate-protein (CHO-PRO) beverages and traditional all-carbohydrate (AC) beverages immediately and two hours after two two-hour trial rides. Ingestion of the CHO-PRO beverage resulted in a 17% greater plasma glucose response, a 92% greater insulin response, and a 128% greater storage of muscle glycogen compared to the AC beverage. These findings demonstrate that the rate of recovery is coupled with the rate of muscle glycogen replenishment and suggest that CHO-PRO recovery supplements should be consumed to optimize muscle recovery.

The Effect of Carbohydrate and Protein Supplement on Resistance Exercise Performance, Hormonal Response, and Muscle Damage
The study used 34 male subjects to determine whether resistance exercise performance and post-exercise muscle damage were altered when consuming a carbohydrate and protein beverage. Each subject performed three sets of eight repetitions at their eight repetition maximum to fatigue for multiple exercises. The results demonstrated that the CHO-PRO supplement reduced muscle damage and soreness, as evidenced by the elevated response levels of both myoglobin and creatine kinase.

Effect of a Carbohydrate-Protein Supplement on Endurance Performance During Exercise of Varying Intensity
In this study nine trained cyclists were given carbohydrate-protein
beverages and all-carbohydrate (AC) beverages to compare the effects. Athletes were given supplements every 20 minutes during three separate testing trials. Carbohydrate supplementation was found to significantly increase the time to exhaustion, while the addition of protein enhanced the effect of the carbohydrate supplement. Therefore, the addition of protein leads to an improved insulin response of a carbohydrate supplement, resulting in improved aerobic endurance performance.

Coingestion of Protein with Carbohydrate During Recovery From Endurance Exercise Stimulates Skeletal Muscle Protein Synthesis in Humans
The following study investigated whether ingestion of protein with carbohydrates after a two hour cycle exercise would increase muscle protein synthesis by measuring subjects’ muscle fractional synthetic rate (FSR) and whole body net protein balance (WBNB). All six athletes showed increase muscle FSR and improved WBNB when coingesting carbohydrates and proteins versus carbohydrates alone, signifying improved muscle protein synthesis.
