Ages ago, in the Ethiopian highlands, a goatherd named Kaldi noticed that his goats wouldn’t sleep at night after munching on a particular tree. Kaldi told the abbot of the local monastery, so the abbot put some of its berries into a powerful drink. He found that it kept him alert through the evening prayers. So he shared it with his brothers in the monastery and the popularity of coffee spread.

He had not trained for the event—and worse he had arrived late, a full 30 minutes after the race had begun. But Cirildo decided to race anyway against the world’s best endurance runners.
Astonishingly, he would complete the course in 19 hours, 37 minutes, and 3 seconds—a full half hour ahead of competition! His secret? He ate chia seeds before and during the race, the way his ancestors had done for centuries. Mayan and Aztec warriors believed the chia held supernatural powers and would eat them during long hunting trips. Modern science has shown that chia seeds are packed with protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, calcium, and fiber. This has made chia a popular energy food for marathon runners.
