It’s time to STOP iron-deficiency anemia in India. Our 16-cent SOLUTION starts with GUdNeSs!
Stop Anemia for Gud! A video by Let’s Be Well Red from LBWR on Vimeo.
Hi, my name is Rajvi Mehta. I’m a first year medical student at Duke University and the founder of Let’s Be Well Red, a social venture combating iron-deficiency anemia in India.
Iron-deficiency anemia is the world’s MOST PREVALENT nutritional disorder. People who suffer from anemia have low levels of iron and low levels of healthy red blood cells. Since iron is crucial for proper growth and development, anemia:
Causes fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath
Can lead to heart failure or miscarriages in adults
May result in permanent learning disabilities in children
It’s especially a MASSIVE HEALTH PROBLEM in my home country, INDIA. It affects an estimated 900 million lives, including over 55% of women and 70% of children.
Why is anemia so prevalent in India? There are many socioeconomic and epidemiologic factors involved, but mostly, the majority of Indians do not get sufficient iron through their diet.
HOW can we allow this disease to continue ravaging the lives of millions when the solution is as simple as a diet change? A healthy dose of iron is all that is needed to prevent anemia.
In 2012, Let’s Be Well Red launched GudNeSs bars, our simple and delicious solution to anemia. GudNeSs is an iron-rich nutritional bar that contains the World Health Organization daily recommended dose of iron, 14 mg.
Made with the help of nutritionists, a sprinkling of LOVE, and containing just the right amount of iron. We use local ingredients to make a bar that is rich in iron and other nutrients. GudNeSs contains:
G – ‘Gud’ or Jaggery – The sweet flavor of GudNeSs
N – ‘Nachani’ or Finger Millet – A rich source of iron and calcium
S – Sesame and flax seeds – contribute more iron and other minerals
GudNeSs is presently available in retail stores, NGOs and schools. We’re expanding to include hospitals, airlines, and mid-day meals for children in over a 100 government schools. In slums and rural areas, we’re creating local women-run GudNeSs production units and providing subsidized bars.
COST: 16 CENTS
Less than a coke, just more than a cup of tea- GudNeSs bars are a nominal Rs. 10 or 16-cents.
GROWTH FASTER THAN WE EXPECTED
IN UNDER A YEAR, GudNeSs has grown exponentially.
GudNeSs has become available in 25 schools, 4 NGOs and 5 retailers across 3 states. We’ve produced over 70,000 bars!
We’ve secured an order to provide GudNeSs bars to a major Indian airline, and are in talks to introduce them into hospitals and mid-day meals in schools.
WHAT ARE THE FUNDS FOR?
We are simply unable to keep up with the surging demand. We NEED YOUR HELP to open a new GudNeSs production unit in south India. The production unit will allow us to produce more bars and cut the cost of delivering them. Your contributions will also go towards piloting new distribution and transportation chains, because we are currently renting costly trucks and tempos (small 3-wheel vans) to distribute bars!
WHY INVEST IN US?
We’re going to succeed because we are fighting anemia unlike any previous effort. Our model focuses on accessibility, sustainability and empowerment.
