Aguida is a 100% owned and operated Mexican beverage manufacturer which specializes in making cactus based juice products. The company was founded in 1982 and it’s manufacturing plant is in Guanajuato, Mexico. It was awarded the work merit prize by the state of Guanajuato both in 2010 and 2011.
The juices are made from the Nopal cactus which are grown on their ranch, it is then combined with either orange or pineapple juice to make it more palatable. The consistency is thick and uneven and the flavor is pungent and earthy. The juice is without added sugar or conservatives and the Nopal is 100% organic.
Aguida, according to their website, are the only company in the world producing Nopal juice products in tetra packaging. The company won the award for most innovative product at the ANUGA food fair, the largest and most important food fair in the world for new retail food and drink products.
Analysis and Impact:
Nopal is native to and iconic of Mexico, appearing on the national flag as well as being a very important food staple. It requires cooking in order to be eaten and forms a part of many Mexican dishes.
The health benefits of Nopal are wide ranging, it contains insoluble and soluble dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals. It is also common knowledge affects the glycemic index and may be good for diabetics.
Aguida’s Nopal juice is likely targeted at the health oriented consumer and those who have digestive issues as it is very high in fiber. The taste is neither pleasant nor disgusting but it does take some getting used to.
